Barnsley Singers is 10 years old today. On Tuesday 18 October 2016, over 200 adults came together to sing for the first time at Horizon Community College, with Mat Wright MBE and Luke Mather.
Ten years of singing
Over the last decade the choir has been on quite a journey, enriching the lives of at least 500 adults across Barnsley. Today we have around 150 members from all walks of life, rehearsing every Tuesday at Barnsley Sixth Form College, with no auditions and no need to read music.
Some of the moments along the way:
- Christmas concerts, summer concerts and carol services across Barnsley
- Singing at Remembrance services and civic events at Barnsley Town Hall
- The Canta al Mar festival in Calella, Spain, in 2018
- The BYC10 Gala Massed Choir Concert with Barnsley Youth Choir at the Metrodome in 2019
- Category winner and two Golden Diplomas at the Hull International Choir Competition in 2025
- Singing live with Joe Judge for The Choral at Parkway Cinema Barnsley in February
- A Gold Diploma and a Silver Diploma at the International Choir Competition Blackpool in September
Thank you to everyone who has played a part in our story so far: members past and present, our musical team, our committee and volunteers, and everyone who has come to listen.
Celebrating on 31 October
To mark the milestone, we have a fantastic day planned on Saturday 31 October at Barnsley Metrodome Arena.
- Tarn in Tune, in the morning: over 400 singers from 12 adult choirs join together in song, learning pieces in workshops. We’ll introduce the choirs taking part over the next two weeks.
- Our 10th Anniversary Party, in the evening: 400 guests celebrating with a buffet, a bar and live music from Platinum Party Band.
Here’s to the next ten years.
